Welcome to the Studio: Learning, Crafting & The Art Behind Our Tie-Dye.
Every shirt, hoodie, and piece of hand-dyed apparel at Hippies & Ravins is a passion project. While we're working hard and perfecting our techniques with every batch, we love taking you along for the process!

Here is an inside look at how we bring these vibrant designs to life and what goes into every single run:

A little peek behind the scenes.

1. Preparation & The Soda Ash Soak
Good tie-dye starts with proper prep work. We soak all of our garments in a soda ash solution to open up the fibers. This helps the dye bond to the fabric so your colors stay bright and vibrant wash after wash.

2. Folds, Ties & Experimentation
This is where the creativity and lots of trial and refinement make the magic happen! Using spirals, custom folds, and tight ties, we map out each pattern. Because every fold and tension line varies, no two pieces come out identical, making every item completely one-of-a-kind.

3. Color Application & Curing
We apply professional-grade dyes by hand, experimenting with color saturation and layering to build rich gradients. Once dyed, the garments sit for a 24-hour batch cure so the pigment can fully set into the cotton.

4. The Deep Washout & Final Unveil
After curing comes the best part: the big reveal! We wash each garment through multiple temperature-controlled water cycles until the water runs clear, followed by a final wash to remove any excess dye.

We're constantly testing new fold styles, dye mixtures, dye types and techniques to bring you the best quality pieces possible. We also hand draw all of our own designs. Have a pattern or color combo you’d love to see us experiment with next? We are always looking for inspiration for our apparel. Drop a comment below—we'd love your feedback!
